It is distinguished by a rich repertoire of traditional songs, irregular rhythms and powerful harmonies that are deeply expressive and emotionally charged.
The project began in 2011, when Bulgarian singer Dessislava “Dessi” Stefanova — founder of the London Bulgarian Choir and former soloist and assistant choir director of the Filip Kutev Ensemble in Sofia — gave her first workshop in Switzerland. Since then, singers from all over the country have been meeting regularly to explore this vocal heritage under her direction.
The choir performs more than 80 Bulgarian folk songs, often polyphonic, incorporating traditional vocal techniques. From within the choir, the Swiss Bulgarian Band was born, bringing together musicians and singers around traditional and contemporary instruments.
