Why Les Rugissantes?

The title refers to the Roaring Forties, the name given by sailors to the zone between the 40th and 50th parallels in the southern hemisphere. The zone was given this name because of the strong winds at these latitudes, most of which come from the west. This region of the globe has fewer land masses that can break up the sea and slow down the winds. As a result, the winds are particularly violent and the seas rough.

It’s make or break. It’s a tough battle against the headwinds.
This is the only way to complete the Round the World Race… to complete the whole loop. As the saying goes, ‘Under 40 degrees, there’s no law, but under 50 degrees, there’s no God’. Once past this point, even if it’s not yet ‘La Croisière s’amuse’, the worst seems to be over. More clement winds are appearing, but the voyage is not over.
Graphic artist Christina Samuelsson has also been through the ordeal of cancer, in this case stage IV melanoma of the neck. One of the ways she expresses what she has felt and still feels is through painting:
‘The experience of illness transforms you, and you automatically become out of step with other people and have different priorities. I’m so happy to still be here that I feel a kind of urgency to live, to enjoy life to the full. That’s what I devote my energy to, and nothing else. The essential is there, within reach. I
