The Pierre Aubert Walk

Add to favorites
A walk to discover the work of Pierre Aubert, a renowned 20th-century wood engraver.

Pierre Aubert is the master of twentieth-century Swiss printmaking and a leading exponent of woodcutting in Switzerland. Born into a line of peasant clockmakers in the Vallée de Joux, Pierre Aubert learned the art of wood engraving from the painter Tell Rochat. After several trips and exhibitions around the world, Pierre Aubert left the Vallée de Joux to settle in Romainmôtier in 1961.

The walk begins in the Place du Bourg, in front of the square fountain, and returns there after a long loop, allowing you to discover some of the most picturesque corners of the medieval town and its magnificent natural surroundings.

The route takes you to visual landmarks that you’ll recognize by the engravings created by Pierre Aubert.
By comparing the actual motifs with the images on site, you’ll not only realize the originality of the artist’s interpretation of subjects from ancient times – old stones, old streets, old fountains, old trees… – but you’ll also be able to look for elements that have changed from the year of representation indicated in the captions of the vignettes; for, as the Romainmôtier motto inscribed on the Clock Tower announces: “Time flees”… and beings, and things, change: cycles of life!
